Community OutreachServices Our Organization Provides to the CommunityThe Atlantic Pops Community Band exists to serve its members and its audiences alike with meaningful music and charitable community experiences. Over the past decade, the Atlantic Pops has performed over 40 concerts in the Atlantic County area, performed an Easter Concert in Mastricht, Holland, and recently on the deck of the USS Intrepid in New York City. The purpose of the Atlantic Pops is to provide a musical, social, and educational experience for area musicians, students, and educators in the greater-Atlantic County area. To foster a broad community benefit a majority of our concerts have a benefactor or charity focus in lieu of a charge for admission. Lastly, membership in the Atlantic Pops Community Band is an inclusive, diverse, community-based experience for people of all genders, races, and ages. Promoting Accessibility for People with Disabilities: Atlantic Pops uses facilities that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations and standards. Parking for the physically disabled and easy access ramps is provided. Seating for people using wheelchairs is available in a manner that allows seating with their family or friends. Hearing amplifiers, for the hearing impaired, are provided at no cost. Finally, all programs and the Atlantic Pops Community Band website (www.Atlanticpops.org) include disability symbols. Advancing and Advocating for Arts Education: Through the use of annual scholarships, the Atlantic Pops Community Band is able to help members, who are students, continue their education and bring a new perspective to the organization. Area Music directors are invited to attend performances with students in order to allow them to experience new and different music and presentation styles. Offering New and Increased Opportunities: Our Children's' Concert: is an intergenerational effort between grandparents and their grandchildren. Children are exposed to a different type of music than they are accustomed to. For some, it is their first experience with live music and narration. Many times, this exposure leads to students enrolling in the music programs in their respective schools. Read more about this program in our COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES AND BENEFITS section that follows below. Reaching Out and Expanding the Number and Breadth of Programs: Atlantic Pops is constantly looking for new members and places to perform. Our music repertoire is quite extensive. We are currently meeting with managers in several locations to allow a variety of performance venues. This will allow us to reach new audiences and invite other musicians to join our core group. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES AND BENEFITS Winter: Since 1998, the Atlantic Pops Community Band has performed a Toy Drive Concert at the Egg Harbor Township High School or Middle School. Instead of charging admission, new, wrapped toys are accepted and donated to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. Spring: At our annual Side-by-Side Scholarship Concert, each director or educator in the group is asked to select students from his/her respective Ensembles to perform with the Atlantic Pops Community Band. This is also the concert where Guest Conductors appear. Last Spring, this concert was conducted by Dr. William Silvester, Director of Bands at The College of New Jersey. In 2007 three scholarships, totaling $750.00, were awarded. Two recipients were long-standing members who are undergraduate students at Stockton State College; one was awarded to a student from Ocean City High School who is now attending Atlantic Cape Community College. Over 120 students and Atlantic Pops members, ages 13-72, performed at the Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center Performing Arts Center at Ocean City High School. Three 2008 Scholarship Winners were announced at our April 2008 Concert. Our Children's Concert is a free concert, dedicated to grandparents and children, as an intergenerational program providing a musically entertaining and educational event. This concert is held every other year and is sponsored by Brigantine Recreation Department. The most recent endeavor was "Peter and the Wolf" with narration by BJ Capelli from radio station 102.7 FM. Summer: The NJMEA Community Band Festival is sponsored by the New Jersey Music Educators Association. This concert combines the efforts and programs of five community bands from South Jersey to promote the organizations as well as the meaning, purpose, and benefits of community music programs. This event is held annually at the Cumberland County College Performing Arts Center located in Vineland, NJ. |
